Redact a PDF
Permanently black out sensitive information — names, addresses, account numbers, amounts. The text under the black is truly destroyed, not just hidden. And since everything runs in your browser, your confidential document never leaves your device.
A black box isn't enough — ours is
The classic mistake: placing a black rectangle on top of text in an editor. The text is hidden to the eye… but still there: just select it, copy it, or open the PDF another way to read it. Leaks of "redacted" documents have happened exactly like this, including at government agencies.
GetFormat does real redaction: each page is rasterized (turned into an image) with the black areas baked into the pixels. The final PDF contains no trace of the hidden text — impossible to select, copy or recover. As a bonus, the original document's metadata and hidden text are dropped too.
And all of it without ever uploading your file: a medical record, a contract, a bank statement stays on your machine. Exactly the kind of document you should never send to a third-party server.
Frequently asked questions
Is the hidden text really removed?
Yes. Unlike a black rectangle placed on top (where the text stays selectable and copyable), GetFormat rasterizes each page: the final PDF is an image and the content under the black no longer exists. This is the safe way to redact.
Is my document sent anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser. A sensitive document (contract, bank statement, medical record) never leaves your device — you can go offline after the page loads.
Can I still select the text after redaction?
No, by design: since pages become images, text is no longer selectable. Keep your original PDF if you need an editable version.
Is it free?
Yes, free and no sign-up, no watermark and no page limit.
